Video: Ethan Banks talks SDN implementation and OpenFlow protocol

Date: Aug 21, 2013

Ethan Banks, SDN expert and owner of Packet Pushers Interactive, sat down with SearchSDN's Rivka Gerwitz Little recently at the Modern Infrastructure Decisions conference in New York. They discuss practical examples of SDN implementation, including using Open vSwitch and a hybrid approach to get SDN up and running. Banks also looks at OpenFlow in current SDN deployments. The importance of the OpenFlow protocol in current SDN deployments depends on the problems IT professionals are trying to solve, Banks said. He adds that the Open Networking Foundation's work on the OpenFlow 1.4 specification over the coming months will determine just how important the protocol will become. Lastly, Banks reviews the roles of network overlays and virtualization as the emergence of SDN continues, along with possible northbound API standardization.
