VMware tool tracks certifications, offers custom options
In a recent post on the vInfrastructure blog, virtualization and cloud architect Andrea Mauro, co-founder and board member of the VMware User Group, discussed a new VMware tool that makes tracking and managing the growing number of VMware certifications easier.
Mauro said the VMware Certification Manager allows users to easily view, access, manage and share their VMware certification, history and progress. In addition, they can download certificates or logos and track completed exams and training.
The VMware tool is similar to Microsoft's certificate planner, although Mauro added that the VMware tool isn't as easy or as clear to use as Microsoft's. Still, he said, the VMware Certification Manager lets users see which certificates are required in order to reach certain goals.
For those looking for personalized certification transcripts, Mauro suggested using the option to create custom transcripts to input desired information.

Joint venture offers NFV-based managed security service
Packet Pushers blogger Drew Conry-Murray looked at the recent managed security services joint venture from RCN Business and network functions virtualization startup Versa Networks in a recent post.
Leveraging Versa Networks' virtual security functions, RCN Business Managed Security is offering branch and remote offices virtual network functions that span firewalls, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) protection and web content filtering. RCN Business Managed Security offers standard and advanced firewall capabilities. The standard tier provides stateful firewalls and DDoS protection, in addition to application tracking. The tracking feature, Conry-Murray pointed out, allows companies to track employees watching Netflix at work, for example. The advanced tier includes next-generation firewalls and URL filtering to block suspicious sites.
RCN's Managed Security requires use of its fiber internet service, as well as hardware devices at each location, Conry-Murray said. Network traffic passes through an RCN data center, where Versa's virtualized security functions run on generic hardware.

Upcoming trends for big data and analytics
Looking for the latest in big data and analytics? In his recent post, Nik Rouda, an analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group Inc., in Milford, Mass., predicted four trends that will shape the second half of 2016:
- Databases and data warehouses. Databases continue to improve and mature, as unstructured data reveals its limitations.
- Machine learning. Get ready for more invisible lending hands embedded in applications, as MI, artificial intelligence and cognitive computing show their capacity.
- Cloud. Amazon, Google, IBM, Microsoft and Oracle are already floating at the top of this industry, but others are on their way to providing quality cloud service.
- Hadoop market consolidation and standardization. Rouda said he believes this trend will help consumers, independent software vendors and distribution vendors. Through simplified competition and freedom to innovate, vendors will separate important secondary functions, like cluster management and security, to create a unified big data offering.
