Versa, EMC partner to offer 'virtual CPE in a box'

ICYMI: Versa Networks and EMC present providers with turnkey 'vCPE in a box;' Aryaka released a new managed SD-WAN service; and ONUG formed a hybrid cloud working group.

Versa Networks and EMC have partnered to offer a validated, turnkey "virtual CPE in a box," with the goal of allowing service providers to deploy virtual network functions quickly and inexpensively. The product's VNF capabilities include routing, VPN, firewall and more.

According to SDN startup Versa, its FlexVNF software, which is designed to enable providers and large enterprises to run and manage services for branch and wide-area networks, coupled with EMC's network functions virtualization infrastructure (NFVi) platform allows providers to easily and quickly spin up new managed services in the cloud.

Virtual customer premises equipment, or virtual CPE, runs on commodity hardware and tends to cost less than proprietary hardware. By running on EMC's NFVi platform, Versa said FlexVNF can lead to Capex savings of up to 80%.

Other benefits of virtual CPE services include faster provisioning and more agile service delivery. Versa said vCPE also allows small and medium-sized businesses to use the kinds of network services often limited to large enterprises.

The Versa-EMC virtual CPE offering also provides multi-tenancy. Each Versa VNF can support up to 250 end-user organizations.

SD-WAN news from Aryaka, Talari and VeloCloud

Aryaka recently introduced SD-WAN ULTRA, a cloud-based, managed SD-WAN service that uses a global private network, WAN optimization and software as a service acceleration to strengthen connectivity.

The company said SD-WAN ULTRA addresses the Achilles' heel of typical software-defined WANs: jitter and inconsistent latency stemming from using the public Internet. According to Aryaka, SD-WAN ULTRA's ability to access a global private network and use WAN optimization dramatically improves connectivity for mission-critical traffic without relying on MPLS.

In related news, Talari launched updates to its SD-WAN portfolio, with new versions of Talari Adaptive Private Networking and Talari Aware. Release features include improved routing, better IPsec integration, cost-effective redundancy, multi-tenant capabilities and cloud-based SD-WAN management.

In other SD-WAN news, startup VeloCloud -- founded in 2012 -- reported that it enjoyed a banner year in 2015, with 30 times more sales than in 2014. The company said it also added more than 100 customers and expanded its workforce by 50%.

ONUG launches Open Hybrid Cloud Working Group

The Open Networking User Group (ONUG) has launched a new working group to tackle the challenges associated with open hybrid cloud products and services. The Open Hybrid Cloud Working Group plans to recommend a common set of open capabilities that cloud providers should offer.

The working group was formed following a closed meeting at the ONUG Fall 2015 conference, during which high-level IT executives discussed opportunities and challenges they anticipate in transitioning enterprise workloads to the public cloud. The working group plans to address security, IT skill sets, vendor lock-in and technical architecture, creating a framework to help enterprises as they move toward an open hybrid cloud model.

The group will share its framework recommendations in May during ONUG's spring conference in Mountain View, Calif.
